Project Otter

Help Us Find South Africa's Otters!

You know Owl Rescue Centre for saving owls and wildlife, but did you know that we are also members of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group (OSG) and Species Survival Commission? To complement our current work, we've activated a new strategic focus: Project Otter!

We are commited to safeguarding South Africa's two native otter species. Our mission is to research and restore the populations of the African Clawless Otter and the Spotted-necked Otter.

We're deploying camera traps in areas where otters were historically found and in suitable habitat where they should naturally occur. This non-invasive method is critical for establishing baseline population sizes, distribution, and activity patterns. We continue to utilize specialized survey techniques (such as spraint and track analysis) to determine their current range and identify viable subpopulations that require priority protection.

The data we collect through public sighting contributions will help us answer a few critical questions to address some conservation concerns.
